Chapter 12

I pulled into a parking spot near the Bone Gap Historical Society, still thinking about the conversation I’d overheard between Liam and Sera. Their cryptic words and barely veiled threats stayed on my mind as I stepped out of my car, ready to uncover more information about Rosehill Asylum and Elijah’s research.

The historical society building stood before me, a quaint structure that seemed frozen in time. Its faded blue paint and intricate white trim spoke of a bygone era, much like the secrets I hoped to unearth within its walls.

As I approached the entrance, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being watched. I glanced over my shoulder, scanning the quiet street, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. Just my nerves getting the better of me, I supposed. The case was beginning to wear on me.

I paused with my hand on the door handle, my eyes drawn to the approaching figure of Sheriff Emmet Quill. His presence here was unexpected, to say the least. What business could the sheriff have at the historical society? As he drew closer, I couldn’t help but notice the deep furrow etched into his brow, a clear sign that something was weighing heavily on his mind. His usual confident stride seemed slightly off, as if he was carrying an invisible burden.

“Sage,” he greeted me with a nod, his voice carrying a hint of surprise and perhaps a touch of wariness. “Didn’t expect to see you here. Bit far from your usual haunts, isn’t it?”

I forced a smile, trying to mask my unease. “Just doing some research for a personal project. You know me, always curious about local history.”

Emmet nodded, his eyes scanning the building behind me. “Right, of course. The Poe sisters and their... unique interests.”

I could feel the tension crackling between us, like static electricity before a storm. Emmet’s posture was rigid, his jaw clenched tight. Something was definitely off.

I shifted my weight, searching for a way to break the uncomfortable silence that had settled between us. “So, Sheriff, how’s your garden coming along this year? I remember you mentioning you were planning to expand it.”

Emmet’s posture relaxed slightly, a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “Well, I’ve had mixed results. The tomatoes are thriving, but something’s been getting at my zucchini. I swear, I turn my back for one second, and half the crop disappears.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle. “Sounds like you’ve got a clever critter on your hands. Have you considered setting up a motion-activated sprinkler? It worked wonders for Aunt Hecate’s herb garden last year.”

“Now that’s not a bad idea,” Emmet mused, stroking his chin. “Might give it a try. Lord knows I’ve tried everything else short of camping out there with a shotgun.”

We shared a laugh at the mental image of Emmet in full sheriff regalia, lying in wait for vegetable thieves. The tension between us eased a bit more.

“How about you?” Emmet asked, his tone genuinely curious. “Still keeping up with that garden of yours?”

I nodded, pleasantly surprised he’d remembered.
